University 101 began in 1972 as a class to help students adjust to college life and learn more about campus resources. Fifty years later, Governor Henry McMaster will proclaim Friday, August 26, 2022 “University 101 50th Anniversary Day” in recognition of the international impact of U101.
The university’s innovative approach launched the freshman experience movement across the country, and while approximately 90% of colleges offer some form of freshman coursework, Carolina University du Sud has been recognized by U.S. News and World Report as having the highest-ranked freshman experience among public universities.
why is it important
Students who enroll in U101:
- return for their second year at higher rates than those who did not enroll.
- have higher first-year GPAs.
- graduated at higher rates.
Additionally, U101 Instructors and Peer Leaders have a higher overall level of job satisfaction.
These and other benefits have led to the widespread adoption of the program, dubbed “the Carolina model”.
By the numbers
Each year, approximately 500 instructors, peer leaders, and graduate leaders teach more than 300 sections of the course and assist more than 5,500 students in their transition into, through, and out of college.
