Udupi: University level seminar on ‘phonetics and linguistics’ held at Milagres College
Udupi, July 20: The Association of Teachers of English (AET – MU), the Department of English, led by the Director of Milagres College, Dr. Vincent Alva, and his colleagues, and the IQAC team led by its Coordinator, Dr. Jayaram Shettigar, co-hosted a University Level Workshop/Symposium on ‘Basics of Phonetics & Linguistics’ on Wednesday July 20 at his Audio-Visual Auditorium.
As registration opened at 9 a.m. for scholars, teachers and selected interested students from the various colleges from far and near enthusiastically participated in the day-long debates and deliberations.
An official inauguration ceremony was held at 10 a.m., invoking the blessings of the Almighty Lord, “aa banali minuguva taregallu, ninna pritiya haradutive” by the students of II B.Com, B, followed by a warm welcome speech by the event organiser, Prof Chandrika, Dept of English, MCK host in the august presence of scholarly resource persons Dr Alwyn D’Sa, Registrar, St Aloysius College (Autonomous), Dr Prasad Rao, Principal, Govt First Grade College, Hebri, Dr. Victor Vaz, President, AET, Sojan George, Secretary, AET.
Dr Vincent Alva, Principal, Milagres College, Kallianpur, presided over the ceremony, Guest of Honor Dr Leo Alva, Former Principal and now Trustee of A Grade School, with Dufferin Peel District School Board Canada – Dr Jayaram Shettigar , IQAC coordinator and Prof. Chandrka, organizer of the seminar and others were present on the stage.
Chaitrali, from Milagres College, Kallianpur gave a perfect start with his well-prepared opening speech, emphasizing the need and importance of such workshops.
Guest of honor, Dr. Leo Alva, while expressing his joy to be part of this seminar, shared his feelings: “Language is not only a means of communication but it is the door to understand the world culture as a whole, it unites people.
In his presidential address, Dr Vincent Alva, Principal of Milagres College, referenced the inaugural keynote address by IB Sc student Chaitrali and appreciated the organizers for taking a different line in choosing her for this rare feat and delivering the perfect message on this occasion.
To wrap up the scintillating inaugural program, Professor Ceaser Gonsalves, Department of English, offered a vote of thanks to all who are part of and have contributed to having such an ingenious workshop at Milagres College.
The long-awaited Technical Session I started at 10:30 a.m. by Dr. Alwyn DSa, on the basics of phonetics and phonology. A brief presentation of the resource person was given by Professor Prathima, Dept of English.
It was an educational session filled with hilarious moments of life experiences. Phonetics only understands sounds and the primacy today lies in speaking rather than writing, he said.
After the lunch break, Session II, led by Dr. Prasad Rao on Linguistics, as he focused on morphology, syntax, semantics, lexicons, etc., was well received by the participants. An overview of Dr Rao’s personality was presented by Professor Caesar Gonsalves, Dept of English. Concluding the very insightful presentation, Dr. Rao said, “We understand the world through words.
Associate Professor, Department of English, Pompei College, Aikala, Dr. Victor Vaz, now President of the Association of Teachers of English, (AET-MU) Mangalore University, gave praise and appreciation to the organizers , the Milagres College team, led by its principal Dr Vincent Alva, resource persons, Dr Alwyn D’Sa and Dr Prasad Rao, and all those who worked behind the screen directly or indirectly to make the workshop very useful and a great success.
The entire event was moderated by Anouska, III BA, with her lively and meticulously curated presentations by the MCK team, including Professor Caesar, Professor Prathima and student leaders, volunteers and attendees.
About 75 participants, teachers and students, actively participated in the full-day symposium and enjoyed and benefited greatly.
