Preparing for a “New Ireland”: Seminar on Irish Unity

A public meeting will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel this Thursday, March 24, to discuss constitutional change in the event of a border ballot and Irish unity.
This is the seventh in an all-island meeting in a series organized by the pro-Irish civic group, Ireland’s Future, and follows well-attended meetings the group has previously held in Cork, Galway, Dublin, Derry, Armagh and Limerick. Ireland’s Future has also hosted recent successful events in Philadelphia and New York.
The Dundalk meeting will be chaired by presenter and novelist Martina Devlin and participating panelists are Cultúr Migrant Center Program Manager Tinu Achioya, Louth TD Fergus O’Dowd, Dundalk TD Ruairí Ó Murchú, Professor Seamus McGuinness of Trinity College of Dublin and Labor Party Senator Annie Ohé.
Speaking ahead, future Irish secretary Niall Murphy said:
“We are absolutely delighted to bring this conversation to Dundalk. Like previous panels, this panel is a diverse group and reflects the new united Ireland we want to see. One of equality, social justice and rights.
“The Future of Ireland wants to stimulate conversation about how our people are better served and our island is better governed in the times ahead. We are holding town hall meetings across Ireland because we know the issue referendums and constitutional changes are approaching and we want the people of Ireland to be involved and own the conversation before the referendum date is announced.
“There is momentum towards a unity referendum taking place in the not too distant future. More and more people are recognizing that Irish unity is the most attractive outcome and there is growing demand for a conversation depth on where it all leads.
“The economic potential of a united Ireland is becoming very clear to all, especially in the context of Brexit.
“We encourage the people of Dundalk to take a leading role in this conversation. We want to hear a wide range of voices, we want people, especially our young people, to have a say in how we build a new and united Ireland that cherishes all of the nation’s children equally. Ireland’s Future encourages people to come to the Dundalk meeting to listen and engage and be part of preparing and planning for a new, agreed and united Ireland.
The event will take place at 7pm on Thursday 24 March at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Dundalk and will also be streamed live on Ireland’s Future Facebook, Twitter and YouTube channel.
