Oct. 19 seminar in Perry Township will enlighten veterans on VA death benefits – News-Herald
Military veterans looking for details on death benefits offered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs can get their questions answered at an upcoming program in Perry Township.
The seminar will be held at 6 p.m. on October 19 at the Perry Township Community Center, located at 2800 Perry Park Road.
Perry American Legion Post 697 sponsors the program, which is free and open to veterans from anywhere in northeast Ohio. Reservations must be made in advance at the community center — either by visiting the site or by calling 440-259-3772.
“Veterans who attend this seminar will learn more about their VA benefits, but more importantly the family will learn what to do after the veteran passes away,” said Perry post commander Tom Anderson.
Each Veteran is encouraged to bring a spouse and/or other family member who may be able to arrange the Veteran’s funeral.
Topics to be covered at the seminar will include VA death benefits such as military honors at a funeral; funeral allowances; and gravestone and military marker options for the burial site. Veterans will also learn how they and their survivors can receive help from the Lake County Veterans Services Commission.
In fact, a representative from the Lake County organization will join Anderson on the panel of guest speakers at the event. A local funeral director will also address the public.
The Oct. 19 program marks the third VA Death Benefit Seminar that Perry American Legion Post 697 has presented this year. Anderson said the first two seminars, also held at the Perry Community Center, were both filled to capacity.
