A new partnership between Wrexham Council and a local science and discovery center is helping to educate school children about the impact of climate change.
As part of the initiative between Xplore!, based on Henblas Street, and the local authority, workshops for KS2 children will highlight how they can help reduce their carbon footprint through interactive and engaging activities.
This will include exploring how buildings can use less energy, planting more trees and wildflowers, considering how we buy the things we need and where we get them from, and doing more of our trips in an active and sustainable way.
They will take place in the coming months and participants will be invited to take part in a competition to create a decarbonization persona which could well see the winning project become the figurehead of activities supporting local communities as they begin. to think about how they can also reduce their carbon footprint.
By way of closing the workshops, Xplore! will host two showcase events for children from each school to celebrate and share what everyone has learned and showcase a selection of character designs.
Xplore! will work with designers to develop an interactive display to engage everyone in ideas of how we can all make change.
Katie Williams, Head of Business Development and Stakeholder Engagement at Xplore! said: “We have certainly seen an increased appetite from schools for climate change content, so these fully funded workshops are very well received.
“Learners will be able to build their own ‘Sustainability Street’ where they will begin to understand the implications of some of their simple everyday choices.
“We will put our own unique stamp on the content to make it a fun and interactive session using age-appropriate, relevant and meaningful examples of how students can reduce their own impact on the environment.”
