According to Yale researchers, Millennials and Gen-Z’ers are come of age amid a constant stream of alarming news about climate change and ecological destruction. A study of 10 countries by Britt Wray found a level of mental distress in young people that is linked to a sense of betrayal by government and societal leaders of previous generations. Wray makes a call to action for today’s students to be part of a mission that goes beyond an individual pursuit. She believes that today’s distress can fuel positive change in the generation to come.
Our speaker today had the honor of bringing together a team of professionals who have chosen to focus their careers on the climate crisis. Many of them are early in their careers and are actively developing contemporary risk management strategies. They made their own call to action: “This is the fight of our generation. We know that every background, education and experience counts. Let’s be creative and get involved. The unique skills of each young professional are equally relevant to meeting the challenge. Get involved in building your career.
Today’s speaker will lead a focused discussion on the journey to building a career that engages real issues and faces real challenges to improve our understanding and management of natural impacts on society and the economy. .
Organic – Linking extreme weather and climate conditions to economic impact has been at the heart of my professional journey for over 20 years. It has been amazing to see the rapid coupling of science, technology and business leaders focusing on climate risk over the past 5 years. My career began connecting extreme weather and natural disasters to the financial impact for some of the world’s most newsworthy companies, where I focused on energy, agriculture, insurance, reinsurance and business valuation. I then built and led a team that developed software to identify climate risks for global supply chain operations. I have worked closely with companies such as Apple, Unilever, ABInBev, 7-Eleven, MillerCoors, Ross Stores and many more. I recently worked with global leaders in reinsurance and risk management to mutually drive innovation to adapt finance and insurance to climate resilience programs. As a co-founder of two start-ups, I have had significant experience transforming vision into action and catalyzing diverse groups to solve complex problems.
