Jason Isaacs Compares ‘The Death of Stalin’ to Putin’s Press Briefings
Jason Isaacs compared Russian President Vladimir Putin’s press conferences to scenes from his 2017 film Stalin’s death.
The actor said in a new interview that Putin’s briefings could be excerpts from Armando Iannucci’s satire on Joseph Stalin and the legacy of the leader of the Soviet Union.
“Stalin’s death is so prescient; some scenes could be pulled straight from the news,” he said in a fan Q&A posted by The Guardian.
“Putin’s press conference where he lined up all the members of his cabinet could have been a monstrously less funny outing. I find it terrifying that one of the best hopes is for someone in Putin’s circle to reach that 300 foot table and end this. It would take someone of Zhukov’s stature, with balloons the size of the Kremlin domes.
Russia’s Putin-ordered invasion of Ukraine continues to dominate the news after it began six weeks ago.
Isaacs added that he “clearly had the best lines” as Soviet General Georgy Zhukov in the film. “All actors have an endless and bottomless need for flattery. But anyone with half a brain can see that I clearly had the best lines,” he said.
“Who wouldn’t like to receive a five-course banquet every time you open your mouth? But it was weird being surrounded by my comedy heroes. Every time they said “cut”, I took off my cap, sat at their feet and listened to stories of making Monty Python [Michael Palin], The quick show [Paul Whitehouse], reservoir dogs [Steve Buscemi] and Development stopped [Jeffrey Tambor]. Then, when Armando Iannucci shouted “Action”, I suddenly had to take matters into my own hands and slap them.
Last year, the actor said he would like to reprise his role as Inquisitor in a live action star wars movie.
Isaacs was asked about an earlier interview in which he hinted at the possibility of a crossover. “I think it was because of his lightsaber,” Isaacs said. “I would like to use this spinning red lightsaber. I have the coolest wand in the Harry Potter world and I have the coolest lightsaber in the Star Wars world.
When asked if he would return to his role as Inquisitor, Isaacs replied, “I’m open to anything. It’s always about the script. I don’t just want to come to take pictures and go to conventions. I would like to play roles.
“The Inquisitor was a big part when I played him and if the Inquisitor was a big part again, I’d be in.”
“I think it was because of his lightsaber,” Isaacs said. “I would like to use this spinning red lightsaber. I have the coolest wand ever Harry Potter world and I have the cool lightsaber in the star wars world.”
