Giants’ Joe Judge explains overly positive postgame press conferences

After Sunday’s humiliating 20-9 loss to the Miami Dolphins, New York Giants head coach Joe Judge took to the podium and tried to put a positive spin on things.
This approach wasn’t new to Judge, but it turned out to be the straw that broke the camel’s back among fans.
“There were a lot of things that I saw today in the way we played, a lot of things that are going in the right direction, a lot of things that I’m very happy with in terms of the way we we competed. And we were able to make a few stops at critical times, able to make good decisions. A lot of guys stepped in in different situations,” Judge told reporters on Sunday.
“I’m happy with a lot of things in the team.”
Judge’s optimistic outlook didn’t go down well, leading former WFAN host Mike Francesa to call him a “talkative lunatic.”
In a Zoom call on Monday, Judge was pressed about his post-game press conference(s), his overly optimistic public view of the team and why he continues to take an approach that no one don’t buy.
“Look, I approach my comments publicly very differently than when I speak to the team behind closed doors. I’m someone who really likes honesty and is very transparent with the team. I talk about the fact that the truth is on the tape, so when we talk as a team, we talk every week, regardless of the result of the previous game, about the things that we did well that we can build on and the things that we need to correct We’re going through this very, very frankly and openly as a team and making sure everyone’s on the same page,” Judge said.
“In terms of the audience, look, I’m not going to be a guy who’s going to sit over there and pick players. It’s just not my style. I’m just not going to do that and it’s something I’ve believed in as a player and working with other coaches so in terms of coming out in public and chasing guys I’m not going to do that. Are there many things we need to do better to take advantage of the opportunities that are available to us? Absolutely. Yeah, absolutely. Were there things that I saw that made me say, ‘Okay, it’s on the right track, in terms of getting the ball to our players and giving them the opportunity to play games? Yeah.”
Judge singled out wide receiver Kenny Golladay and tight end Evan Engram as players who flashed in Week 13. But then he took things back and focused on the issue of his pressers post-match.
“There are other opportunities in the game that we have to take advantage of. The difference between winning or losing in this league, it’s such a fine line. There’s not a lot of margin for error, so you have to go out there and we have to make sure that when those opportunities come up to be able to make a play, we have to go there and we ‘have to be able to do it,’” Judge said.
So here is. The judge admits that what he offers to the public is very different from what he offers his players behind closed doors. That should come as no surprise, but probably won’t quench the thirst of fans who are simply tired of the used car sales talk.
