The AN ANDOVER School Group held a week-long event earlier this month to celebrate STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) subject matter.

From July 4-8, children from Balksbury Federation had the opportunity to see the many wonders of STEM through building projects that included building Wigglebots (motor-powered animated robots) to design paper painting, building wind turbines and even designing the airports of the future. . With many questions to be answered and many problem solving to be solved over the five days, the end of the week was an opportunity to present projects.

Katy Thompson, Executive Director, said: “It was an amazing week, and we were blessed to be supported by Stannah who dedicated a team throughout the week to inspire our kids in engineering.”

The schools were also fortunate to be supported by the Civil Aviation Authority which encouraged children to study mathematics to open doors to many careers in aviation, and local scientists with a wealth of knowledge to impart.

On Fayre Day, all projects were showcased alongside key STEM personalities who had been researched throughout the week and were seen by over 700 parents and grandparents. Visitors were also able to see demonstrations of the federation’s virtual reality headsets, and even how to make music using a banana piano.

The school thanked Cool Components for all their help and support for the week, Tilney Estate who brought one of their oversized tractors which demonstrated the use of GPS to map where all the tractors on the estate are, and Stannah who brought their green car – there was something for everyone.

With tickets to the science and robot museum up for grabs, the federation held contests for children and families, and were inundated with entries showing off a slew of science and technology projects.

The Fayre was a huge success and showed how the Balksbury Federation ensures that children who attend nursery and primary schools gain a wealth of educational experiences.
