For the first time in two years, interested collectors and enthusiasts have the opportunity to register for a live, in-person American Numismatic Association Summer Seminar, to be held June 18-30 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Billed as “the best numismatic vacation ever”, the seminar offers courses and events covering many different facets of numismatics.

The registration deadline for the summer seminar is May 22.

The summer seminar will take place in two sessions, the first scheduled from June 18 to 23, the second from June 25 to 30.

In late 2021, the ANA announced a return to in-person learning for its 2022 educational events; the 2020 and 2021 summer seminars have been canceled in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Vaccination records and masks are not mandatory for the 2022 seminar.

This year’s summer seminar will take place, as usual, on the campus of Colorado College, adjacent to ANA headquarters.

Session I offers the following courses: Grading United States Coins, Parts 1 and 2; Advanced Classification of United States Coins and Problem Coins; Introduction to the detection of counterfeits and alterations; Detection of counterfeit global paper money; Collecting and investing in Morgan dollars: a global approach; Classic Commemorative Coins; Develop a passion for loose seated currency; Collect United States style coins; Coins of the Roman Republic; American coin errors and main varieties; Introduction to numismatic digital photography; and Creation of a winning numismatic exhibit.

Session II courses include the first two courses offered in Session One, in addition to Advanced Counterfeits, Tamper Detection, and Problem Parts; The first American copper coins; Introduction to Medals and Medal Collection; From the establishment of the first Mint in the New World to the birth of the Mexican Republic; Advanced digital numismatic photography for collectors; An introduction to paper money and coins of the modern world; Tiptoeing Through the Dollars: From Small to Innovative, 1928-2021; World War II numismatics; Advanced World War II Numismatics; Legacy and coinage of father-son coin engravers William and Charles Barber; American Colonial Coins and Currency: A History; Coin Carving 101: Creating the Modern Hobo Nickel; Roman provincial coinage; and The Business of Being a Parts Dealer.

A handful of “mini-seminars” will also be offered.

The following events will take place on June 19 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.: Advanced Numismatic Trading Session I; National Bank banknotes: overview; Collecting Oddball denominations.

June 20, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.: US Errors.

During Session II, June 26-27 from 6:30-9:30 p.m., mini-seminars will explore: How United States currency was and is made; Digital edition of images for numismatics: Gather your obverses and your reverses; Detection of artificial toning, artificial glaze and reproofing surfaces of coins.

Session II, June 26, 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.: Auction World 101: An Insider’s Perspective.

Other events that take place during the summer seminar include a tour of the Colorado Springs brewery, climbing Pikes Peak on the cog railway, a series of “Dinners”, an auction for young numismatists, the annual library book sale and graduation banquets.
